What if getting your passport photo taken was a cute and c-nty experience — even if you’re a trans woman? For many in the U.S. — including celebs like Hunter Schafer — that’s just not a possibility. That was until Black trans woman, DJ and visionary Geneva Love Frazier entered the chat.
“In the first 14 days of this administration, there were so many attacks on my community and identity,” Frazier told us. “I felt paralyzed. Hopeless. I started brainstorming how I could be a resource, not just for myself, but for other trans and queer folks who felt the same.”
For those unfamiliar with Frazier’s lore, she’s a DJ who loves to party. So, she thought, “What if we party.. and leave with a resource?” On March 8, 2025, that vision became reality with the first-ever Passport Function. A safe and affirming space for queer folks to get their passport photos taken, twerk and celebrate.
Considering the inherent stress of official documentation in the U.S., every measure was taken to make sure the dolls were safe. The entire lineup, from the DJs to photographers like Lit Liv, was queer, ensuring a truly safe space. The venue, Brooklyn’s Happyfun Hideaway – home of the Gay Juice – served as the perfect backdrop, where Frazier herself spoke affirmations, reminding the crowd that trans people have always been here and aren’t going anywhere. She had no idea how huge it’d become for an underground safe space.
Just one hour after the event ended, her DMs were flooded with gratitude from the transgender community. “We just left the party at 4 a.m., and you went out of your way to say thank you?!” she said, still in amazement.
This may surprise many, but the event was born out of urgency as Frazier didn’t have her passport herself. “Doing it with my community really helped me feel safe,” she said. She knew this was a need, but she had no clue just how impactful this idea would become. ”It was more than a party,” Frazier said. “People came up to me saying, ‘I needed that so much. I felt so loved and safe.’ That meant everything to me.”
On July 19, Frazier, aka @Sexinchurch, is hosting part two of the function with a documentary in the works, too. Iconic. For “the next installment, I’m doing a docuseries and photoseries. It’s going to showcase the folks participating in the event — all of queer/trans identity, Black and Brown people. An editorial take on trans existence.”
Trans representation tends to picture people on their beds or reflecting on trauma. Frazier desires a timeline where we witness trans joy in all of its forms, even if it’s just a trans person walking. That visibility is beyond important during a time when erasure is at its height.
