Introducing: TAG Heuer x Fragment Team Up For A New Carrera Chronograph Limited Edition

Editor’s pick — Accessory quick take: key highlight (movement/specs for watches, materials/finish, limited run, pricing tier) in 1–2 lines.

What We Know

Back for their third collaboration since 2018, TAG Heuer and fragment, the brand founded by the legendary Hiroshi Fujiwara, are announcing a new Carrera Chronograph that looks unlike any before it. And that should be no surprise. Fujiwara-san is known as the “Godfather of Harajuku,” the Japanese streetwear fashion and culture Mecca he helped shape, in no small part due to his influence and the cadre of friends he has cultivated.

In his own right, his career résumé spans collaborations from the impressive—Nike, Starbucks, Casio, Visvim, Beats, Disney, to name a few—to the surprising and legendary—Levi’s and Martin Guitar. He’s also a musician. Oh, those silver feather necklaces that have spread through music and watch-collecting circles (a very “Fight Club” kind of thing)? Fujiwara introduced the brand’s founder to Eric Clapton, who helped spread the brand. The list goes on. So when Fujiwara launches something, I pay attention.

As with many things Fujiwara, the new Carrera Chronograph is very monotone. The watch starts with TAG Heuer’s more recent “glassbox” framework of a 39mm by 13.9mm stainless steel Carrera, with a domed sapphire crystal that somewhat magnifies the outer rehaut scale for legibility. This time, the dial features a black opalin finish (opalin being the matte, pebbled texture) with a black inner flange, a white 60-second/minute scale, and a white outer flange with a silver tachymeter scale. No snailing on the subdials this time. The indices are printed in grey, and the dial is otherwise stripped down. At 12 o’clock (in Dato 12 style), the date is shown in an aperture, with the 1st and 11th of the month replaced by a single or double lightning bolt for Fujiwara’s fragment logo. The caseback also features the logo and the piece number, since it’s a numbered, limited-edition run of 500.

The watch features the recently reintroduced “beads-of-rice” seven-row bracelet, with an extra touch of customization with a black PVD-coated center link. That PVD subtly adds contrast and should show its wear with age. Inside the watch is the in-house automatic column wheel TH20-00 movement, with an impressive 80-hour power reserve. The rotor of the caliber has been accented by a black outline that carries the design from the front to the back. The entire package has 100m of water resistance.

Like the first collaboration in 2018, the new TAG Heuer x fragment collaboration is limited to 500 individually numbered pieces. The retail price is CHF 8,100, which puts it just across the $10,000 mark in USD.

What We Think

As you can tell, I like Fujiwara a lot. He’s also a friend of Hodinkee, going back to his feature in Volume 1. This is a cool release and feels more cohesive and compelling than the second, which he did in 2020. The price point feels a bit high, all things considered, when you can get a regular reverse-panda “glassbox” for less than $7,000 on a strap and on a bracelet for only $7,250. Price aside, it’s a pretty compelling design and reminiscent of the first collaboration, just upgraded. If you have one, I can see a strong argument for having the other as a pair of vintage-inspired and new twist Carrera versions from Fragment.
