What We Know
A year ago, Baltic released a set of stone dials for their Prismic watches in honor of their then-recently opened showrooms in New York, London, and Paris. Now, the brand has a standalone boutique and is launching four more stone dials to celebrate. The group includes a number of stones that you don’t often see as dial options, but they are some of the most captivating stone dials I’ve seen in some time, with a mix of swirling colors (especially in the Pietersite dial).

Since every dial is a sliver of a piece of stone that is polished down to a thin, flat layer, every dial will look slightly different, and there is no better example in the group than the Pietersite dial, which Baltic has illustrated with the above image featuring a variety of different dial examples.
They have the swirling galaxy-like effect of a marble, with colors ranging from mostly blue to browns, oranges, reds, and yellows. The bloodstone dials look mostly red and green, the dumortierite are mostly blue and white, and the pink albite have an intense bubblegum hue. All of these are delivered in a 36mm by 9.2mm case in a mix of stainless steel (for bezel, lugs, and caseback) and grade 5 titanium. The lug width is 20mm, and the lug-to-lug is 44mm.

The watches feature a La Joux-Perret D100 manually wound movement with a 50-hour power reserve and are topped with a double-domed sapphire crystal and display caseback. The prices range from €1,300 on a strap to €1,360 on a bracelet for most models, with the Pietersite a bit more expensive at €1,450 on a strap and €1,510 on a bracelet.
What We Think
I just got back from Dubai for Dubai Watch Week, and I can tell you that, looking at the wrists of collectors there, stone dials are still all the rage. I haven’t quite been able to dig into it, but I have a hypothesis that there is a new supplier on the block that has been able to make the typically finicky stone dial into something that is more widely available for a variety of customers. If that is truly the case, then I think we should be thankful.

Any time I see a material that was usually reserved for the well-heeled become more available for the masses, my immediate reaction is that it is a great thing for the average watch lover who deserves to wear something special, no matter the price. The finishing on the LJP movement (essentially a Peseux 7001) is where Baltic saves money, but at the same time, you still get something great to look at for a relatively affordable price.
