Introducing: The Urwerk UR-100V ‘LightSpeed,’ Now In White Ceramic

Editor’s pick — Accessory quick take: key highlight (movement/specs for watches, materials/finish, limited run, pricing tier) in 1–2 lines.

What We Know

If you ask me, the UR-100V is a modern classic. While it looks like it has a round dial, the UR-100V is known for the brand’s signature satellite hours display, in which the hour disc rotates around the lower segment of the dial, while an arrow points out the minutes on a track. But the UR-100V LightSpeed goes further, with a three-dimensional planetary display for the the eight planets of the solar system (RIP Pluto). Each position shows the exact time for sunlight to travel from the Sun to that planet, so when the hours satellite leaves the minutes track, it instead tracks that time.

The dial is blacked out, with printed and luminous numerals and text. This is housed under a domed sapphire crystal in a 43mm by 51.73mm by 14.5mm case made of white ceramic developed for Urwerk with silver fibreglass fabric and carbon inserts. The inner case is titanium, and the caseback is sand-blasted, shot-blasted, and DLC-treated Grade 5 titanium. Inside is the self-winding UR 12.02 movement with a 48-hour power reserve, while the crown is at the top of the case. The retail price is CHF 67,000.

What We Think

UR100

Every time a new Urwerk comes out, I inevitably open up websites and start window shopping for a UR-100V. It’s by far my favorite design for the brand. I wouldn’t say that measuring light speed to other planets is high on my “need” list, but I do find this case treatment more appealing than their engraved cases or dinosaur scale treatments. That’s just me. I guess my love of the avant-garde and modern design can only go so far. Urwerk makes only about 150 watches per year, which allows them to take limited but exciting chances with different treatments and designs.
