Introducing: The Patek Philippe 5322G Brings A More Modern-Sized And Styled Chiming Alarm Function To The Catalog (Live Pics)

Editor’s pick — Accessory quick take: key highlight (movement/specs for watches, materials/finish, limited run, pricing tier) in 1–2 lines.

What We Know

Unveiled as part of a slew of new releases for Watches and Wonders 2026, the Patek Philippe 5322G offers a chiming 24-hour alarm complication in a modern case and design, with a new movement and a slightly smaller size than the discontinued model it replaces.

Patek

The watch is housed in a white gold 41mm Calatrava case that’s 12.22mm thick and features hollowed-out lugs, the brand’s signature ‘Clous de Paris’ or “hobnail” guilloché pattern on the case middle, and a single pusher at 2 o’clock. The alarm is programmed through the pusher, and it can be set via the crown in the second position, which the brand says works “intuitively.”

With a water resistance of 30 meters, Patek says the new 5322G is the only water-resistant chiming watch in the current collection. The new model replaces the Ref. 5520 Pilot Alarm Travel Time, which debuted in 2019 and was inspired by an historical aviator watch in the Patek museum in Geneva.

The model continues Patek’s modern Calatrava style with a textured, lacquered dial in green or blue. The applied Arabic numerals and white-gold, syringe-style hands are both filled with luminescent material, adding to the contemporary feel. A hand display date sits at 6 o’clock, while the double-window aperture of the alarm function sits above the handset at 12 o’clock. Powering the 5322G is the new self-winding AL 30-660 S C caliber that chimes the alarm with a single hammer striking a classic gong around the caseback – a truly rare configuration as alarm watches typically use a hammer to strike the case back (à la the Vulcain Cricket).

The bell-shaped aperture at noon enables the user to check the alarm’s status. Its color changes from white, when the alarm is active, to black when it is deactivated. The programmed alarm time appears in a double aperture at the noon position, with the hours on the left and the minutes on the right, indicated in quarter-hour increments. Immediately below is a circular opening that reveals a day/night indicator, allowing the alarm to be set up to 24 hours in advance.

The watch is offered on two straps: a beige calfskin with a nubuck finish is available on both models, while the blue-dial version also features a fabric pattern and a blue textile strap. The green model can also be had with a matching alligator leather strap. The 5322G is priced at $281,321.

What We Think

A chiming alarm in a mechanical watch today is a purely romantic complication that recalls an earlier era, but presented in the modern housing and design of the 5322G, this is very much a watch of today’s Calatrava catalog style. It showcases the top-level skills of Patek’s in-house watchmakers, offering a contemporary style with elevated functionality and a bold price to match. It’s a further iteration on the textured dials introduced by Patek Philippe in 2022 with ref. 5226G and the annual calendar and travel time ref. 5326G, which Patek president Thierry Stern has said was meant to evoke the texture and feel of vintage camera cases.

From a design standpoint, the 5322G feels like a natural evolution of the language established by the 5326 and 5226 series with textured, slightly grained dials, softened vintage cues, and a case architecture that continues the modern evolution of the classical Calatrava playbook. The gradient, almost ombré-style periphery, adds depth without tipping into excess, and crucially, the watch doesn’t advertise its complexity. The placement of the single pusher and the crown, at 2 o’clock and 4 o’clock, respectively, creates pleasing visual symmetry. However, some would certainly note that the knurled crown visually contrasts and jars with the smooth pusher.

On paper, this is a complication we already understand. It’s an alarm watch, something practical, almost utilitarian. But in execution, it lands much closer to the brand’s grand tradition of acoustic watchmaking than anything resembling a tool. Patek isn’t just making an alarm. It’s making a chiming alarm, and that distinction matters. Most alarm watches buzz. This one chimes. It’s closer in spirit to a minute repeater than to a utilitarian travel alarm, as the watch’s design suggests.

Zoom out historically, and the 5322G sits in a very specific lineage. Patek has engaged with alarm watches only rarely, most notably the mid-century ref. 325 and, more recently, the ref. 5520P. Both were niche, both were technically ambitious, and neither was about flagship references. The 5322G continues that thread, reinforcing that Patek’s alarm watches are less about utility and more about acoustic watchmaking as a discipline.

And then there’s the price. More than $280,000 for a watch with these subtle looks and an alarm function seems more than bold. But in the context of Patek Philippe’s chiming watch portfolio, the argument could be made that the 5322G feels almost rational. That’s a strange thing to say about any watch with this kind of sticker shock. But compared to minute repeaters or grand complications, this is a more accessible entry point into the brand’s acoustic universe. You’re getting a novel approach to how an alarm can sound and function, packaged in a more slimmed-down and modern watch that doesn’t scream for attention, even if its buzzy price tag can’t be ignored.
